Make a Miracle

During Hanukkah, we celebrate the miracle of the oil lasting for 8 days. To celebrate, it is customary to give and receive Hanukkah gifts. In the spirit of giving, Hanukkah is a great time to make a miracle for others. Some families elect to give tzedakah (charity) or make a donation to a cause that inspires them.

Tips for donating

  • Giving does not need to be large to be meaningful. For example, in the Jewish tradition, giving money in multiples of $18 is considered to bring good luck.

  • Instead of giving a tangible gift to somebody on your list, you might consider gifting a donation credit to an organization of their choice.

  • Some of the most meaningful donations don’t involve any money at all! You might consider volunteering for an organization in your local community.

  • If you or your family are not in a position to give this year, you can begin planning for next year setting up some saving jars to collect money. Some families use two jars or jars with two compartments: one for personal savings and one for charity.

  • Use an app on your phone to help track and manage your donation goals. Many banking apps also incorporate settings to set aside small amounts from each transaction, or to round up the change.
