Family Wishing Box for Rosh Hashanah
In our family, Rosh Ha Shana represents mainly new beginnings and fresh starts. It's always an opportunity to reflect on the past and think about the future. Its also a chance to dream, wish and desire things for ourselves and for our loved ones.
We were looking for a way to remember our thoughts, hopes and wishes from the previous year and this is how the "Wishing Box" came to live. The "Wishing box" became the container of our hopes, personal goals and dreams, for our self and for our loved ones.
As part of the holiday evening, we each expressed our hopes, dreams and wishes on paper. Our kids would draw, or use other art forms, and it became an activity that we would include in our Rosh Hashanna family dinners. Each one of us would include thoughts about themselves and thoughts about others. We would then create a special box, which was decorated by us all, and put our personal expressions in it. This box was kept in our home, in a special place on the living-room bookshelf. No one was allowed to open it... The year after, on Rosh Ha Shanna celebration, we would open the Wishing Box up, have a chance to reflect on our individualized experiences, and some times share them with the others. These were always special, touching and very thoughtful conversations.
