Shavu'ot

Shavu'ot is one of the three Jewish Pilgrimage Holidays (together with Sukkot and Passover). In ancient times, the Israelites used to pick their first, most tastiest fruits and veggies, and bring them to Jerusalem. Now a days, it's a celebration of the grain harvest!

Religiously, we celebrate receiving the Torah (the first book of the bible), and most specifically the 10 commandments, the basic moral guidelines of Jewdaism.   

'Shavu'ot' means "weeks", as it's celebrated exactly seven weeks after Passover. 

And here's what goes on:

We wear white and get together with friends and family, and eat really yummy cheese based foods. Think - blintzes, quiche and cheese cake. Read more about traditions, activities and recipes below.

What we do:

Harvest Baskets

Celebrating the grain harvest, we fill baskets with 'bikurim' the first fruits, veggies and cheese and carry it around.

Eat Cheese

We eat a dairy meal, composed of sweet and savory pastries, including blintzes and cheesecake, just as the Israelites followed a dairy diet to simplify keeping 'kosher' back in the day.

Wish at Midnight

I was told.. that at midnight, the sky opens and you can make a wish. As a kid, it was always something to strive for. Religiously, 'Tikun Hazot'.

Basket Weaving kit

With this kit, you and your kid (3-12) can actually weave a basket!! Parent's help is needed, but most of the weaving can be done by kids.

Making Ricotta Cheese kit

Make really simple and delicious ricotta cheese. This is an activity to do with your kid!

Making Labaneh Cheese kit

A traditional recipe for my favorite Isreali cheese. This is an activity your kid can do alone!

Since we eat only dairy dishes and fish, it makes sense to serve everything at once, in a buffet style. Savory and Sweets.
