Mid Autumn festival in a nutshell

Mid-Autumn Festival is the Chinese rice harvest festival, celebrated when the moon is at its brightest and fullest. This is why it’s mostly known as Moon Festival. Families and friends get together at night, gaze at the moon and eat mooncakes.

It falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar and is the second most important Chinese holiday after the Chinese New Year.

the goDdess of the moon

Chinese legends tell the story of Chang’e, and her heroic archer husband Hou Yi. Once, there were 10 suns that burned the surface of the earth. Yi shot down 9 of the suns and saved the earth. As a reward he received the magic potion of immortality, but he didn't drink it as he didn't want to become immortal without his beloved wife Chang'e.

One day, one of his men tried to steal the potion, and Chang'e drank it in order to protect it and flew up to the moon. Yi was heartbroken to discover they were parted and offered his wife's favorite cake and fruits to her, hoping she would come back.

Today, we continue his tradition, by sharing mooncake with friends and families. Kids gaze at the moon hoping to see Chang's image.
