Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most popular festivals celebrated across the Indian subcontinent and beyond.
Families get together lighting lamps and fireworks, worshiping their idols and sharing sweets.
The word 'Diwali' originates in the Sanskrit word 'deepavali' which means "rows of lighted lamps."
The story of Diwali
During the Diwali celebrations, Hindus retell the story of Prince Rama and his wife Sita.
While in exile, Sita is kidnapped by an evil king named Ravana. Rama fights the evil king, rescues his wife and brings her home. The couple was welcomed back with many glowing lamps on a dark night. The lamps symbolize the victory of good over evil.
DIWALI IS A HARVEST FESTIVAL
The festival falls on the last day of fall harvest which is the start of the new financial year. Followers pray to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, for success in the coming year. It is also believed Lakshmi was born on this day of Diwali.

Along with Lakshmi [goddess of wealth and prosperity], devotees also offer prayers [puja] to Lord Ganesha for his wisdom and new beginnings.

Diwali Traditions
Diwali is one of the most joyful holidays. The whole family participates in the preparations.

We put on festive clothes. Most Indian families wear Kurtas (a loose collarless shirt) or Sarees (a dress of draped fabric).
Make Rangoli to welcome friends
Rangoli are creative colorful floor designs that are passed through generations and made with materials found at home such as rice, lentil, flour or flower petals.

Traditionally made out of clay and filled with oil and a cotton wick. They are placed in rows decorating windows and streets and burn all night.

Ganesha has a sweet tooth, and loves eating ladoos [sweet dumplings]. On Diwali, we eat and share sweets.
