On Raksha Bandhan, we celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters. It is observed in most Indian communities around the world on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shraavana, which typically falls in August.
RAKSHA BANDHAN TRADITIONS
Tie a Rakhi
Sisters tie a Rakhi, a good luck charm for prosperity, health and wellbeing, around the wrist of their brothers.
Protect Your Sister
Brothers offer gifts and promise to protect their sisters in return for the Rakhi.
Family Reunion
Traditionally married Hindu women travel back to their parents' homes every year for the Rakhi ceremony. Today, some families reunite.

IS RAKHI MEANT ONLY FOR BROTHERS AND SISTERS?
The sacred thread of the Rakhi is not just tied by sisters to their brothers! In some areas of India, like Uttar Pradesh, a Rakhi is tied by a sister to a sister-in-law as well. These Rakhis are called ‘Lumba Rakhis’. This tradition helps bond sister in laws and welcome them to the family!
The festival is also celebrated between brother-sister belonging to distant family members, relatives or cousins!
